Frequently Answered Questions

We see three areas where women are under-served.  The women whose job it is to take care of the home and their off-springs; the women who are employed or are self-employed; and the retirees or empty nesters.

Each required a different focus.  For women whose job is centered around the home, opportunities are needed that can be sandwiched in between sending the children off to school and being there when they return. For example,  golf lessons, followed by 3 – 6 hole events and socializing afterwards.  For women that are employed or are self-employed perhaps offering twilight leagues; for retirees and empty nesters 9 or 18-hole day time leagues.

The First Tee, Youth on Course and the NHGA Junior Golf program offers a number of opportunities for young girls and boys.  However, at the high-school level, there are a few high-schools that do not have the necessary resources or talent to field a girls high-school team.  Girls wishing to play at the high-school level play and compete on the boys team.  We would like to encourage feeder programs from elementary to middle schools and high schools to begin work with these organizations to hopefully grow and field girls teams.

The New Hampshire Women’s Golf Association (NHWGA) as it transitioned to the New Hampshire Golf Association (NHGA) in 2022 recognized that there are many other opportunities presented to young women besides earning a four-year degree.  Young girls are now being encouraged to enter the trades – electrician, plumbers, carpenters, welders or culinary arts –  and community colleges offer certification in fields that either do not require a bachelor degree or are viewed as an introduction to college as the young women decide which field of study they may wish to pursue.

The NH Women’s Golf Grant Endowment allows us to award funds to offset the cost of a women’s participation in women’s state, regional, national and international golf tournaments and events, including registration fees, travel costs, meals and lodging during the tournament or event.  Also, for young girls funds are available offset the cost of participation in youth tournaments.  The amount available for these grants is limited, by the terms of the endowment, and varies from year to year.

Recipients must be female residents of New Hampshire at the time the grant is awarded or an organization that promotes women’s golf in New Hampshire.  Please note that the recipient cannot be related to a member of the selection committee or a member of the Board of the Foundation.

Grants are awarded throughout the year.

There are a number of means to support our organization.  Cash donations may be directed to the general fund or the donation may be designated to augment the NH Women’s Golf Scholarship or Grant endowment.  Cash donations may be made “in honor of” or “in memory of” a loved one.  We will also work with you if you wish to set up an endowment which directs how a donation is to be used. Finally you can  sponsor an event held by the Foundation in support of women/girl golfers.

Yes. Jean E. Lyons scholarship funds are held by the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation Trust. The Endowment that set up this scholarship allowed for the New Hampshire Women’s Golf Association (NHWGA) to accept applications, evaluate the applicants and award the scholarships.

The scholarship is  awarded annually to a female golfer who is a resident of the State of New Hampshire or playing member at a New Hampshire golf club pursuing a higher education at an accredited college or university. The recipient will combine outstanding character with promise of academic success.

A recipient must be a female resident of New Hampshire at the time the scholarship is awarded or a playing member of a New Hampshire golf club and they must be admitted to or plan to attend an accredited college, community college, university, or a trade school.   Please note that the recipient cannot be related to a member of the selection committee or a member of the Board of the Foundation.

Scholarships are awarded annually.  The minimum award is $500.00.  Applications are accepted  in the spring and scholarships are awarded in late May.
